Stephen Perkins Workshop- Day 2

Another great day jam packed with a ton of information.  After going over Weight Distribution and how it affects Gesture in a figure,  Stephen showed us how he approaches sculpting a Life size foot.  He spoke about a sequence of hierarchy and urged us to work from simple to complex forms.

Stephen Perkins Workshop- Day 1

The studio was full of  excitement as we started a new week with Stephen Perkins. Many of us are still absorbing all of the information that was given to us last time Stephen was here.  All of the students arrived early and ready to pick up right where we left off.

Costa Vavagiakis’ workshop

In early June, Costa Vavagiakis had a wonderful workshop on portrait drawing.  He lectured, brought in supplemental materials, and did mini-demos to cover everything from materials and handling to composition and theoretical principles of drawing.  The model Connie was terrific and the group is looking forward to doing this again!

Steven Polson’s portrait workshop

Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to take pictures during Steven Polson’s intensive 2-day workshop but the paintings looked wonderful! Time flies…and the workshop came and went. Students were able to work on two portrait paintings, practicing their starts and learning about value organization, while working from general to specific.

Here’s Steven lecturing to a few students:

Thanks for a great workshop and we’ll let you know when he returns to Janus for another workshop some time later in 2010.

Sarah Lamb’s still life workshop

Sarah Lamb’s workshop was phenomenal. It’s amazing how much one can learn in just three days! Sarah guided our workshop students through an intense three-day still life painting workshop covering concepts such as the color poster, block-in, composition and color mixing with such clarity. Not only were the structured demos packed with generous information, but the critiques were invaluable.

Despite the snowstorm last Wednesday, the third and final day of the workshop, Sarah trekked through the slush along with a handful of students to finish their paintings. Here are some images from the workshop.

Due to the intensity of the workshop, combined with the snowstorm, we weren’t able to take shots of many other beautiful paintings. Join us next time (as Sarah Lamb will be back at Janus sooner than you think) and stay tuned for an announcement for another stint this summer! Thanks for a great workshop, everyone.
